| Gillette UK installed an ATMS stock tracking system - the first of its kind to be used in any of Gillette's raw material warehouses world-wide. The system is fully integrated with the company's MFG/PRO manufacturing system.
The company installed the system as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment of its Reading Manufacturing Centre.
Huw Waters, Gillette's Warehouse Manager, said: "The new warehouse has meant that the 95 per cent of components previously stored by our suppliers are now stored on-site. |

"This resulted, however, in the need for a comprehensive warehouse management system that would not only handle stock control but be up-and-running within a matter of months."
Gillette approached a number of different suppliers but opted for ATMS.
"ATMS was chosen due to the positive feedback we received from its previous customers. They all spoke of their flexible and responsive working relationship with ATMS - something that we seek with all suppliers," said Mr Waters.
The Reading centre is Gillette's European toiletries facility and manufactures brands such as Right Guard, Natrel Plus and the Gillette series of own toiletries.
The system comprising bar code scanners, radio terminals mounted on fork-lift trucks and bar code label printers, was installed less than five months after the order was placed.
"Since its introduction, the system has allowed us to increase our inventory accuracy and at the same time improve the management of stock."
"It has also been accepted very well by the warehouse operators who were previously responsible for key punching most stock data. Using the most state-of-the-art radio data terminals they can now scan the bar codes - helping to reduce the level of human error by 90 per cent."
Efficient stock control has a direct affect on the entire production process from the delivery of raw materials to the despatch of finished products.
The introduction of a real stock control system has enabled Gillette UK to replenish stock at the line side 24 hours a day, seven days a week, therefore enhancing the overall efficiency of the entire supply chain.
